BBB Secure Your ID events help thousands

Secure Your ID DayIdentity theft is an enormous problem, and over half of its victims can trace the theft to something that was stolen from their possession. So the first rule is: If you don’t need it, shred it – responsibly. Crime statistics show that last year, more than 9.9 million Americans were victims of identity theft, costing them roughly $5 billion.

This fall, your BBB offered businesses and consumers a chance to safely destroy sensitive documents for free at BBB’s Secure Your ID Days that were held in Omaha NE, Lincoln NE and Wichita KS. In addition, donations for local Food Banks were taken at the Lincoln and Wichita events. A total of 118,780 lbs. of documents were shredded on site.

“BBB wishes to thank all of the partners in each of the cities that helped at the events and made them possible! Shredding confidential documents is a great way to limit exposure to identity theft which is largely a crime of access,” said BBB President and CEO Jim Hegarty. “Your BBB is pleased to provide this service that helps people keep their identities safe.
